Webinar: Catering Business of Latvia. Post COVID-19 Challenges and Opportunities

Thursday, May 14, 2020 - 12:00 to 13:00

On 14 May, we held a joint chamber webinar “Catering Business of Latvia. Post COVID-19 Challenges and Opportunities" which was led by Jānis Jenzis, President of the Latvian Restaurant Association, Chairman of the Board of Riga Tourism Bureau.

During this webinar, Jānis gave a presentation on how food businesses nationwide are handling Coronovirus and what have been the consequences of the 2-month long state of emergency. Jānis also spoke about the state funded support that has been so far offered to companies in catering and hospitality businesses. He pointed out that even though government has set aside funds to help catering/hospitality businesses during the pandemic, there has been a lot of issues for businesses to obtain these funds due to bureaucratic hurdles. It was also pointed out that a long discussion with the government in terms of decreasing the VAT for catering and hospitality businesses has so far, unfortunately, been unsuccessful. During the webinar, the participants from hospitality business had a possibility to ask questions and share their experience on how the current situation has impacted the sector and what are the plans in terms of reopening hotels and restaurants. It was pointed out that the health and safety measures are the top priority for everyone before reopening the businesses which will also have an impact on doing business in the future (e.g. breakfast set up arrangements will have to be changed as buffet style breakfasts no longer will be considered as safe). However, businesses look positively into the future and hope that the recent decision of opening borders with neighbouring Baltic countries will help to start restarting the hospitality businesses.

We would like to thank Jānis Jenzis for finding time to address our members.
