Radisson Morning Roundtable: Facebook - Soft Power Weapon?

Thursday, November 7, 2019 - 08:30

On Thursday 7 November we were delighted to welcome Nika Aleksejeva to our November Radisson Morning Roundtable: Facebook – Soft Power Weapon? Nika is a Lead Digital Forensic Researcher at NATO StratCom COE, and during her presentation she walked the group through the world of digital forensic research. Nika and her team deploy various approaches to detect fake Facebook pages and accounts, which they then share via open sources in a collaboration that can help social media channels like Facebook improve their systems and algorithms to decrease the number of active disinformation networks. Nika presented a few real cases of fake Facebook Latvian Networks explaining step by step how fake accounts can be detected. Following the presentation our members had the opportunity to engage in an inquisitive and enthusiastic conversation which explored the topic further including discussions regarding the newest disinformation trends, topics and the potential infringement around freedom of speech if attempts are made to legislate tougher measures to control or stem disinformation via social media.

We would like to thank to Nika Aleksejeva for taking the time to address our members at this Roundtable discussion, and our gracious host and sponsor Radisson Blu Rīdzene Hotel for providing a great venue and refreshments.

The next Radisson Morning Roundtable will be held on 5 December at Radisson Hotel Old Town Riga,  Z.A. Meierovica Boulevard 10 . Detailed information on topic will follow in due course.
