Networking Reception with Ian Gray, Chairman of Eversheds Sutherland Europe

On 9 April BritCham in cooperation with Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns Law Office hosted a Networking Reception with a special guest Ian Gray, Chairman of Eversheds Sutherland Europe. The event was kindly co-hosted by our new member Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga.

The event was devoted to discussing the current compliance regulation issues – something that each business needs to be aware of and prepared for. Māris Vainovskis, Senior Partner at Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns touched upon key compliance issues like Whistleblowers compliance system as well as compliance with the “Sanctions Law” and establishment of internal control system. After the presentation guests asked questions related to globalisation of the legal market as well as possible future challenges related to Brexit. The Q&A session was followed by informal networking enjoying the refreshments and wonderful view from the VIP room's 8th floor.

Keynote: Ian Gray, Chairman of Eversheds Sutherland Europe is responsible for the firm’s 21 continental Europe countries as well as acting as Executive Partner for Eversheds Sutherland (International) as part of the Global Executive team. He has particular responsibility for the firm’s client strategy around the world, spending much of his time with General Counsel and their teams meeting their multi-jurisdictional needs.

He joined the firm in 1997 and became a partner in 1999. He has been part of the leadership team for over ten years, and previous senior roles have included International Managing Partner (2015-2017), leadership of the Litigation Practice Group (2008-2015), and senior management sponsor for Gender Diversity (2011-2017).

He spent the first part of his career with a Magic Circle firm, working both in London and Asia, with stints in Tokyo and Hong Kong. Much of the work he has handled has involved an international element. He also worked for the firm's ground-breaking inquiries and investigations team, playing a senior role in the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, as well as managing substantial claims for the UK Government.
