BritCham Season Opening: 13th Annual Curry Cook-Off

We have enjoyed a busy start of our season and last night on 12 September we officially kicked off our season with the return of our 13th Annual Curry Cook-Off.

We were delighted to offer our members a first look at the recently opened AC Hotel by Marriott Riga following large scale refurbishment. It was a beautiful space and venue to open our season,  reuniting our long standing members and providing the opportunity to meet some of our new members. We would like to thank AC Hotel by Marriott Riga as one of our new members for donating the space and staff to make this such a brilliant event.

As ever, our teams rose to the challenge and presented a wide range of delicious dishes spanning far reaches of globe, the variety and quality remained high and we are proud to say that year on year we see the competition for the top prize increase.

Of course there is no Curry Cook-Off without our amazing teams and judges. This year we enjoyed an increase in our participating teams which made the judge’s – British Ambassador Keith Shannon, Director of Tax Advisory at KPMG Latvia Ilze Berga and owner of Indian Raja Restaurant Sunny Motwany- life even harder to choose an overall winner, but we are pleased to say, our expert judges were once again up to the task and voted as follows:

First place – a beautiful and delicate “Pahari Mutton” curry prepared by Radisson Blu Daugava team that was a pure pleasure to taste – they have set a high bar for future years. As first prize they were awarded a gift certificate from Radisson Blu Latvija Conference&Spa Hotel.

Second place – a valiant effort from our members at King’s College, The British School of Latvia with their “Latvian Spicy Surprise” curry – we hear they have already started working on next year’s curry recipe to claim the top spot. We wish them luck – and hope they enjoy the gift certificate from Casa Nostra in the meantime.

Third place – a delicious “Kharhai” curry prepared by Riga Business School team that was also voted Guests’ Favourite curry. For first time participants this was a an excellent result, so we hope they will enjoy their well-deserved prizes - gift certificates from Bocca Buona (Radisson Park Inn by Valdemāra) and AC Hotel by Marriott Riga.

We are also pleased to announce that Riga Business School team have kindly agreed to share the recipe for those who feel inspired to try this at home or those who missed yesterday’s event. Please see the Guests’ Favourite Curry 2019 recipe here.

In true BritCham style, our members and friends made the evening a success with their enthusiasm and company. In addition to enjoying the delicious food from our teams, guests were also treated to delicious snacks and drinks from our Board member Kully Singh which offered a taste of what was to follow. The ambiance of true Curry Cook-Off event was created thanks to decorations provided by Sunny Motwany.

One of our lucky guests won the business card raffle and can look forward to a lunch in the new AC Hotel by Marriott Riga restaurant. There was also a surprise raffle prize from our member Riga Graduate School of Law.

As a small token of our appreciation we presented all participating teams with gift packs from Mežpils Beer and MILZU! cereal gift set.
